Anti-Pollution Skincare: Protecting City Skin From Daily Damage

Fine particulate matter is small enough to settle into pores and generate free radicals on the skin surface. In cities, this shows up as dullness, uneven tone, congestion and premature lines.

How Pollution Damages Skin

PM2.5 particles are roughly twenty times smaller than a pore. They carry heavy metals and hydrocarbons that trigger oxidative stress, degrade collagen, disrupt the barrier and increase pigmentation. Combined with UV, the damage compounds — pollution makes sun damage worse and vice versa.

Antioxidants Are Your First Defence

Morning vitamin C at ten to fifteen percent neutralises free radicals before they damage collagen. Vitamin E and ferulic acid stabilise it and extend protection. Niacinamide, resveratrol and green tea extract all add measurable antioxidant support. Antioxidants work preventively — applied after exposure they do far less.

Sunscreen Doubles as Pollution Protection

Modern SPFs with antioxidant complexes and film-forming polymers create a physical layer particles cannot easily bind to. Apply two fingers' worth every morning, and reapply if you commute or spend hours outdoors.

Double Cleansing at Night

This is the single most important step for city skin. An oil cleanser or micellar water dissolves sunscreen, sebum and the oil-bound pollutants clinging to it. Follow with a gentle gel or cream cleanser. Skipping this leaves particles sitting on your skin overnight, feeding inflammation.

Barrier Support

Pollution weakens the barrier, so rebuild it nightly with ceramides, panthenol and fatty acids. A strong barrier physically blocks particle penetration. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers and daily scrubs, which do the opposite.

Weekly Extras Worth Doing

One gentle chemical exfoliation weekly clears dulling dead cells and congestion. A clay or charcoal mask once a week helps oily, congested city skin. Anything more aggressive is counterproductive.

The Simple Daily Protocol

Morning: gentle cleanse, vitamin C serum, moisturiser, SPF 30–50. Evening: oil cleanse, gel cleanse, niacinamide or retinoid, ceramide moisturiser. That routine handles ninety percent of urban environmental stress.
