Skin Barrier Repair: How to Fix Sensitised, Over-Exfoliated Skin

If your skin suddenly stings when you apply products it used to tolerate, you probably have not developed an allergy — you have damaged your moisture barrier, most often by over-exfoliating.

What the Barrier Actually Is

The outermost layer of skin is a wall of corneocytes held together by a lipid mortar of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in roughly a 3:1:1 ratio. That mortar keeps water in and irritants out. Strip the lipids and water escapes, irritants enter, and inflammation follows.

Signs of Damage

Tightness after cleansing, stinging from previously fine products, new redness or flushing, flaking alongside oiliness, rough texture, sudden breakouts, and increased sensitivity to weather. Dehydrated-but-oily skin is a classic barrier signal.

Stop Doing These Immediately

Pause all acids, retinoids, vitamin C, scrubs, cleansing brushes, clay masks and hot water. Cut your routine to three steps for at least two weeks. Every additional active extends the recovery.

The Recovery Routine

Morning: rinse with lukewarm water or a cream cleanser, apply a ceramide moisturiser to damp skin, then a mineral SPF 30. Evening: cream cleanser, then a barrier cream with ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, panthenol, squalane or centella. Add an occlusive balm on top of dry patches overnight.

Ingredients That Rebuild

Ceramides restore the lipid mortar. Niacinamide at two to five percent increases ceramide production. Panthenol and centella asiatica calm inflammation. Squalane and glycerin hold water. Petrolatum reduces water loss by up to ninety-nine percent and is unbeatable for the worst days.

How Long It Takes

Most barriers recover in two to four weeks. Severe damage from aggressive peels or prescription retinoid overuse can take six to eight. Skin cells turn over on roughly a twenty-eight-day cycle, so patience is part of the treatment.

Reintroducing Actives Safely

Wait until you have had a full week with no stinging. Reintroduce one active, twice a week, applied over moisturiser to buffer it. Increase frequency only after two comfortable weeks. Never restart two actives at once — that is exactly how the damage happened the first time.
