The Curly Hair Routine: Definition, Volume and Zero Frizz

The Curly Hair Routine: Definition, Volume and Zero Frizz

Curly hair is not difficult, it is just different. It is naturally drier because scalp oils cannot travel easily down a spiral, and it needs moisture, gentle handling and the right drying method rather than more product.

Know Your Pattern

Waves (2A–2C) are loose S-shapes that flatten easily and need light products. Curls (3A–3C) form defined loops and need moisture plus hold. Coils (4A–4C) are tight zig-zags with the highest moisture needs and the most fragility. Porosity matters more than pattern: low porosity hair repels product, high porosity absorbs and loses it quickly.

Cleansing Without Stripping

Wash the scalp, not the lengths. Use a sulphate-free shampoo once or twice a week, massaging only the scalp and letting the runoff clean the hair. Co-washing between shampoos keeps coils hydrated, but clarify monthly to remove build-up that flattens the curl pattern.

Conditioning and Detangling

Apply conditioner generously to soaking wet hair and detangle only then, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb from the ends upwards. Never brush curls dry unless you are stretching them deliberately. Deep condition weekly with heat for ten to twenty minutes.

Styling on Soaking Wet Hair

Water is the styler; everything else locks it in. On dripping hair apply a leave-in, then a curl cream, then a gel — cream for moisture, gel for hold. Use praying hands to smooth, then scrunch upwards. Do not touch the hair again until it is fully dry.

Drying Method

Plop into a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel for fifteen to twenty minutes, then air dry or diffuse on low heat and low speed, cupping sections and holding still. Once dry, scrunch out the gel cast with a drop of oil in your palms — that crunch is the cast doing its job, and breaking it early causes frizz.

Protecting Curls Overnight

Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, or use a bonnet. A loose pineapple ponytail on top of the head preserves volume. Refresh in the morning with a mist of water and a little leave-in, scrunched in — never combed.

A Realistic Weekly Schedule

Wash day once or twice a week with full styling, refresh on the other days, deep condition weekly, clarify monthly, trim every three months. Consistency beats new products every time.
